Plant of the month for July

Hydrangea aspera

From the Himalayas to Central and west china and into Taiwan. This species of Hydrangea is not your normal “Mop head” flower. It has lacecap flowers heads crowded with blue/purple fertile flowers, in the centre, with an informal display of white to pink petals on the edge. The leaves have a velvety almost hairy appearance which is a perfect foil for the flowers.
A large shrub perfect for the back of a border or a “Statement plant.
