A year ago today we had the lowest temperature recorded in the garden for at least two decades. It dropped to -7. Last night going down to -2 with today not much more than freezing.

This morning my walk to work was through the silence of a snow covered landscape. Not as deep as the heavy snow of last February or as photogenic. The thing that amazed me on my stroll up in to the garden was the amount of animal tracks in the fresh snow. Hare, pheasant and fox being the ones I could recognise but there were numerous others breaking the sheet of freshly fallen snow. It is always surprising to see how much activity goes on within the garden usually undetected.

The forecast is for more of the same for at least the next few days. Read my tips on how to protect your plants and let’s hope they get through the cold snap.
