The first magnolia bud to show colour this year is on our seedling, from our champion Magnolia campbellii ssp.molicomata, tree above the cock pit.

Traditionally this has been our first to flower. The earliest date, in the last decade, was January the 19th. This year today, February 4th, the buds are now starting to show colour.

Follow our Magnolia’s progress and 5 other “Champions” on the great gardens of Cornwall web site and see if spring does comes earlier to Cornwall than the rest of the UK…

“and we’re about to prove it! Keep up-to-date as six gardens chart the progress of their champion Magnolia campbellii trees. The official start of spring for us will be when the first three trees have flowered with at least fifty blooms”.
