After the recent storms, with gale force winds and torrential rain, our first magnolia flower has braved the elements. The tree is a seedling of our "Champion" Magnolia campbellii subsp.mollicomata.
It has been the first Magnolia to flower here since I began phenology ( the study of periodic plant and animal life cycle events) records for the tree.
The first flower dates are below. The dates show a tendency to flower mid January in mild winters and February to March if we get a cold snap. This year is 13 days later than last year. Spring offically started on February 19th last year, according to the great gardens "Spring Story" page on their website. It records the flowering of champion magnolia trees within the great gardens where spring is "triggered" when 3 trees each have 50 or more blooms. Visit Great gardens of Cornwall for more information.
