Due to the high winds last week we lost one of our champion trees, Magnolia kobus. The tree was coming to the end of its natural life being braced with steel cables for at least the last decade. It flowered freely producing tiny white, scented star like flowers in the spring.
A champion tree is one that is either the tallest or largest girth of its type in the British isles. Measured and checked by the Tree register.
We had 24 champions at the beginning of 2012, with the loss of an Acer to honey fungus and now magnolia kobus we have 22 champions to lead us into 2013.
