Magnolia watch 2015
Since 2003 I have been keeping a record on the first flowering date of our Magnolia campbellii seedling (the parent plant being M.campbellii subsp.mollicomata), the “Champion Tree” on main lawn. It is our first flowering Asiatic magnolia in the garden.
Results have been varied with the earliest flowering in 2012 on 10th January to the latest in 2010 on the 8th March.
With this year’s generally mild winter I was expecting an early show. Camellias in the garden have been thinking it has been spring since early December!
I will risk “Magnolia Neck” (some trees are 30m, 100ft, plus!) and keep looking up till i spot the first flower.
Check our social media sites, Facebook, Twitter, for the latest news or follow the “Spring Story” on the Great gardens of Cornwall, where they use the flowering times of the magnolias to officially announce spring in England.
