This time of year it’s really hard to pick only one plant of the month. But when she is in flower (and to be honest even if she isn’t) Rhododendron faconeri is just simply stunning.
This Himalayan species introduction is usually credited to Sir Joseph hooker in 1850 but it seems likely that a Colonel Sykes collected ans sent seed back to Britain in 1830.
Huge trusses of creamy yellow, waxy, flowers with a purple throat adorn the tree like shrub in April. Lush matt dark-green leaves add to it’s beauty.
