My plant of the month for August is…

Astelia chathamica. A hardy, clump-forming perennial with elegant, silvery spear-shaped leaves. Originally from the Chatham Islands off the coast of New Zealand, it's common name is “Silver Spear”.

In spring, long flowered stalks of yellowish-green emerge, which go on to produce orange berries in summer.

The foliage is a good foil for other plants. Ours are planted in front of Rhododendron macabeanum with its silver coloured leaves
