Plant of the month for September is…
Hedychium densiflorum
Commonly known as a ‘Ginger Lily’ it grows from bulbous rhizomes with lush tropical foliage just over a metre tall and can be grown in sun and semi-shade.
The orange raceme of the flower appears in late summer with berries following in early winter. Its hardy with us but the foliage will be cut down by frost. protect the rhizomes in winter with a good layer of mulch.
