And first place for 2009 goes to… (imagine opening an enevelope now).

Enkianthus perulatus

A member of the ericaceae family from Japan. We re-discovered this shrub this year when we gently chainsaw pruned the area surrounding it on George johnstone walk. The clearance allowed light into the bay and for the first time in many years we saw the truly stunning autumn colour from this plant. Intense scarlet leaves stayed on the shrub for weeks literally glowing in sunlight. Cornwall doesn’t do well with autumn colour but this Enkianthus is guaranteed to cheer you up on a dull autumnal day. A well behaved, slow growing shrub. A must for the woodland garden.

I make no apologies for using the picture elsewhere on the web site but I believe its stunning enough and you cannot have too much of a good thing.

Thank you for reading my awards for 2009. I look forward to seeing you again on March 1st 2010.
