Imagine I am opening a gold coloured envelope (you can feel the tension) now ready to announce first place in this years “PPOTY” award
First place and the gold award plus title of Plant Personality Of The Year goes to:-
Rhododendron ‘Trewithen Purple’
A late entry in to this years award it has recently received the “RHS certificate of international registration”
Raised and bred here at Trewithen by George Johnstone and then head gardener Jack Skelton it has been offered for sale in the nursery since the 70’s. I sent it for approval to the RHS plant committee when they were at caerhays. To my delight they recognised the garden merit of the plant and now it is a registered hybrid.
A compact plant with small scented foliage and becomes covered in purple trusses in spring with regular repeat flowering in late summer. Can be pot grown and also withstands good levels of sun.
No excuse not to have a piece of Trewithen history in your own garden.
