On Friday 5th March Neil and myself took a van load of camellia flowers to the RHS early Camellia show held at Wisley garden in Guildford. Its over 50 yeaars since Trewithen has entered one of the London flower shows.
The picking and packing all went smoothly and we arrived at Wisley at 8.00 am (after an almost 6 hour drive due to road works!).
Being the last competitors to stage our exhibits meant we could spread out and choose the best blooms with no pressure. The stewards helped and we were all done by 9.20am.
After an anxious 2 hour wait for the judging we made our way back form a walk around the garden for the results which are:-
3 first places
4 second places
4 third places plus various highly commended.
Our first place in the species was won by Camellia saluensis Trewithen dark red form. This caused a bit of a stir being a “Myth and legend” as one competitor told me. C.saluensis is usually a plae pink and ours is definitely leaning towards dark pink/Red.
Camellia saluensis Trewithen Red Form.
Chatsworth house did exceptionally well with some absolutely stunning blooms. Congratulations to them.
Roll on next year.
