The tree ferns (Dicksonia antartica) are showing signs of a full recovery after the winter frost burnt the fronds.

None of our tree ferns kept their fronds this winter. I’ve pruned off the dead and have been waiting for signs of life. Now the crosiers are unfurling rapidly so there will be a lush display of new leaves throughout spring and summer.

It may have been cold but they survived without wrapping or fleece. Just goes to prove how lucky we are to be in Cornwall.

Keep ferns in the back of your mind when re-planting or creating new areas. They are useful for shade areas and can give a real tropical, prehistoric feel to a problem area.
