Ella, from Truro, started working for the Nursery when she found herself unemployed after her previous job ended. She said:

“It was through the previous Head Gardner, Mike Taylor, that I learned about the job in the Nursery and I liked it so much that I’ve been here ever since.”

Ella’s main role is to pot-on plants and, on an average day, she can get through 400 to 500 plants.

Nursery Manager, Luke Hazelton, said: “Apart from working one day a week instead of two, nothing has really changed since Ella started here and she remains as enthusiastic about her work as on her first day. She is a great member of the team and everyone enjoys working with her.

“It is quite an achievement to have remained in the same job for so long and to be working at 80 years old! Based on our calculations, we think that she has potted around half a million plants in that time!”

After being presented with a card and cake by staff, Trewithen’s owner, Michael Galsworthy, congratulated Ella for her many years of work. He said:

“I would like to thank Ella so much for all of her help and support over the years. She has been, and I hope she will continue to be, an integral part of the team here at Trewithen.”
