In actual fact these mini pumpkins are the seedpods from camellia reticulata and have the same likeness and indentations as the bright orange vegetables that are carved into at Hallowe'en.

Head Gardener Gary Long said: "These seed pods are between the size of a golf ball and a tennis ball and are pretty strange looking things!

"They are hanging in the Camelliarium, or our camellia walk, from wild collected seed from China in the 1920s. I am hoping to travel to Yunnan in China to see the original plants growing in the wild next year."

Gary will be germinating the seeds collected from the pods in the garden for re-planting and sale in the future.
